The (once) emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and process automation are now maturing. It’s time to look at the key technology trends driving business transformation this year.
In a quest to find more efficient ways to operate, companies are shifting their business processes to the cloud and shutting down their own data centers. Switching to public cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS or Google Cloud that have a huge bandwidth and strategically placed data centers is a smart move for organizations seeking to deliver more value from their data.
Over the years, major public cloud platforms have also moved quickly from pure hosting capabilities (Infrastructure as a Service) to more advanced capabilities such as machine learning frameworks, analytics, cognitive services and so on. So it’s not only about the efficiency from getting your data in the cloud, but also about new ways to exploit data.
In addition, we notice a shift to event-related applications and serverless architectures, which allow small, specific applications to run in light environments such as wrist devices, wearables or other small mobile devices. At the same time, 5G networks will further turn these wearables into ‘dumb’ data conduits as the speed, low latency and reliability of 5G will enable a shift of processing power to the cloud.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. Although we have seen glimpses of AI at work in our daily lives in the past years, this is the year it spreads everywhere although end users might not always be aware. For instance, TV sets are using AI to change picture settings depending on light conditions or where viewers are in the room, cameras are using AI to monitor picture quality, and digital assistants are also assuming many more different shapes - Cars, soundbars, laptops, TV sets, the list goes on. More and more digital platforms also have embedded AI behind the scenes to enhance user experience, whether it’s a website, an online shop or an intranet portal. As PwC reports, 20% of US organizations plan to deploy AI enterprise-wide this year, and it’s all about increasing convenience and service personalization.

Redefining consumer experience in line with data protection regulations is another trend. GDPR has definitely raised awareness around privacy and made ‘trust’ more valuable than ever in relation with customers. Customer insight, on the other hand, remains key for superior service. Protecting customers' personal data forced organizations to rethink their digital strategy in 2018, but the full effects of the General Regulation on Data Protection are yet to be at full steam. All-in-one CMS platforms like Adobe and Kentico have been progressively introducing new tools and features to help marketing and sales teams better manage customer privacy. But with a deeper understanding of the new rules and their impact on all kinds of business workflows, organizations will continue to adopt a data-driven culture, fine-tuning information-centric ecosystems based on privacy, analysis and security, so as to enable secure interactions and high-quality customer experiences.
Entering the Information Technology Era is the next trend. Leveraging information will become a core competency, and companies will start to realize the benefits of artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve service delivery and generate new revenue streams - but only with algorithms, the orchestration of models and correct data and infrastructures.
This trend will be felt not only across private sectors, but also public organizations, as intense pressure is being placed on the latter to play a more active role in the digital ecosystem and raise their standard of service to citizens. Example of innovative public services range from advanced traffic prediction, over crime prevention, to faster and more accurate services based on an automated intake of requests via social media channels.
