A few weeks ago, I focused on how AMPLEXOR ensures high-quality translations by keeping linguists at the heart of your translation strategy. While we strive to have a strong linguist voice present, we also adhere to top quality translation standards, practice proven methodologies and supply superior technologies to support our commitment to quality.

To reap the highest degree of word re-use and message consistency you can separate content areas to add or remove contexts to keep the re-use of words consistent in its context. What we mean by this is you can store the same word that has different meanings and its translations in two separate areas for accurate re-use. Make sense? Probably not entirely, let us give you an example: Let’s say your company molds products as its service offering. If this is the case you do not want the linguist to translate “mold” with the meaning of “moldy products” like the fungus (gross!), you want them to translate it with the meaning “casts” or “shapes” products. Makes more sense now, right?

Localization industry quality standards we follow
It is important to adhere to quality standards set by whatever industry you’re in. Adhering to translation quality standards becomes especially important when our clients’ global presence is at stake. Thus, we are highly regulated and accountable (with the certificates to prove it!) and have many customers who are also heavily regulated. Oftentimes, not only do we need to adhere to our industry and company standards, but also our customers’ industry standards.
Therefore, AMPLEXOR follows quality standards to make translations more objective. We do this by scoring linguists and their translations, and by determining how well translated text meets its communicative purpose.
Because language can be so subjective, everyone interprets what they read, see and hear differently. To make translation quality more objective, several metrics and standards have been created. Among others, AMPLEXOR uses the SAE J2450 Translation Quality Metric. This allows us to establish a consistent quality standard for all translations and implement a metric all linguists must attain to be a translator for AMPLEXOR. Our linguists must score a 99.5 percent or higher on their translations to be compliant with AMPLEXOR’s quality translation standards.
We have teams of linguists who translate, edit and proof translations in order to receive accurate translations. Then, the linguists are scored based on their translations. These scores are how we obtain high-quality linguists and prove they can deliver high-quality translations.
AMPLEXOR has higher quality standards than most LSPs because we understand how important it is to get translations done right for you the first time. Outsourcing your translation requests to a single professional freelance linguist or your own internal resource simply does not compare to the process we take to ensure we are using the highest quality linguists.
Professional freelance translators who are not sourced through an LSP cannot give themselves an accurate “score” because they cannot verify their translations are accurate. Due to the subjective nature of a translator’s job and how they interpret the information, it only makes sense for the translator to think they have translated the information correctly. But, the reality is one person can’t verify whether the information is accurate.
At AMPLEXOR we recognize TAUS, the language data network, is paving the future of localization quality. We follow the TAUS methodology and align with the industry guidelines they use to evaluate translation quality with the Error Typology Approach.
The Error Typology we use in our language quality assurance (LQA) is based on the Multidimensional Quality Metric (MQM). MQM provides a systematic framework to describe and define quality metrics to assess the quality of translations and if specific issues are present within them. The framework consists of the following:
- Specific vocabulary for categorizing quality issues
- A quality scoring system based on error count
- Declarative markup
- Guidelines to selecting issues
- Informative mappings from existing legacy metrics like J2450 to MQM
The difference between MQM compared to J2450 is that MQM’s main purpose is not to define a single metric like J2450, but to approach quality in a way that defines how well translations meet their communicative purpose. MQM provides the set of criteria bulleted above to assess the quality of translations. Just like J2450, the criteria is intended to promote objectivity.
