The AMPLEXOR Life Sciences and IBM-partnered BE THE EXPERT  2018 conference and training is now in its 20th year, and it’s safe to say that DAY TWO of this year’s edition was quite interesting and thought-provoking. With a stunning backdrop of Dubrovnik harbor, our keynote speaker Professor Josef van Genabith of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), outlined how artificial intelligence can power a new approach to translation in Life Sciences – neural machine translation (NMT).

AMPLEXOR is currently working on a NMT project with DFKI, so it was fascinating to hear Josef expand on how human experts and machines can work together for the greater good of the industry. The AI theme continued throughout the day, with some speakers sharing examples of how AI is already helping life sciences organisations, from improving regulatory life to using big data to get new insight into a disease, while others looked into their crystal ball to see how AI might be deployed in the future.

Ilyssa Levins of the Center for Communication Compliance delivered an illuminating presentation that looked at the digital health revolution and how that is being addressed by Life Sciences. As we move towards a more patient-centric approach to healthcare, patient engagement will become even more integral to the life sciences value chain.

But as we all know, Life Sciences is also an industry that faces ever-growing complexity around data and regulation. Regulatory Information Management (RIM) grows ever more important and speakers from both AbbVie and Alexion shared their own experiences of working with AMPLEXOR to deliver a successful RIM implementation in two companies of such different sizes. How the industry manages data, both now and in the future, will certainly have a significant impact on future successes. Data integrity is vital and a number of speakers stressed that for all the potential of AI and machine learning to transform the industry, poorly categorized and managed data can negate most of the benefits.

Thank you to all our speakers, sponsors and delegates for contributing to a truly memorable day. We’d love to hear your thoughts on DAY TWO of BE THE EXPERT 2018. Share your comments below.
